Illustration & Design for Jewellery, Central St Martin’s College of Art & Design
Later in 2010, I did a second course in the old Central St Martin’s building, learning how to draw jewellery for manufacture. The teacher was the sublime Hannah Martin, whose private clients include Angelina Jolie, The Killers and Vivienne Westwood
We learnt the traditional way to draw and paint a ring, ready to be made up by a goldsmith.
Our final project was to design an original piece of jewellery.
My piece was a choker made of faceted, polished, volcanic obsidian beads in asymmetric baguettes of obsidian and scarlet patent leather.
The choker was called ‘Jamaican Girl’ and was inspired by a Jamaican girl I passed in the street wearing black stilettoes and a black raincoat, cinched with a scarlet belt.
